| Most
of the galaxies known to us are elliptical
galaxies. Elliptical galaxies do
not have arms and are found to be either
nearly circular in shape (E0), or
extrememly stretched and flattened out
similar to that of a cigar (E7).
Hubble divided the elliptical
galaxy classification into eight sub-classifications,
E0 through E7: E0 -
nearly circular, E1 - a little
stretched, E2 - elongated, E3
- more elongated and flattened, E4
- even more elongated and flattened,
until we reach E7 which is
extrememly elongated and flattened. |
