mission has undergone numerous changes
since first proposed in 1993. The primary
objectives of the mission are to go into
a polar orbit about Mercury and return
images and data on the surface,
composition, gravity, and internal
structure of the planet. Nominally, the
mission will orbit Mercury for 9 months (3
Mercury years). A mission scenario
employing solar-electric propulsion is
being studied. The Mercury orbiter has
been recommended as the 5th or 6th
mission in ESA's Horizon 2000 program. |
